It won't hold much magnetism without the end plates.

I just noticed GM and I have essentially the same avatar.

i'm not so sure about that. alnicos are stand alone magnets. one of my first toys was a magnet experiment set. it came with an assortment of alnicos and ferrites. one thing i work on is marine radar sets. and the magnatrons exclusively contain alnicos. i have a few and they do come in handy sometimes.

(edit; actually one of my first toys was a cardboard box should have said "favorite")

I've always heard they need the plates, and when I took apart a speaker as a kid, the AlNiCo magent went basically dead when I removed it.

Re: 0t i believe i have an ebay problem

It has to do with their shape and how its 'grain' is oriented in the molding process as well as how they are magnetized. During my brief time at Champion Slot Car Products, we switched from ready made motors and tweaked versions to a new line of uber performance motors using AlNiCo and it was a steep learning curve even with Union Carbide doing the vast majority of the design work to meet our size, performance goals.

I still have some of those magnets and trust me, even though they're too wore out to take a decent charge, they're still way more powerful than a brand new ferrite of a similar size.
